How To Build Your Own Tiny House

Have you been dreaming of your own luxury tiny home? Are you considering building it yourself, but you don’t know if you can do it? That was me just a little over two years ago. With absolutely zero home building experience, my husband and I built our own custom tiny home of our dreams.

Do you want to learn how we did it? Well, keep reading! Here’s what I’m going to show you.

  • First, you’ll learn where to start when it comes to becoming a DIY tiny home builder.

  • Second, you’ll see how you can stick to your plan while keeping a budget.

  • Third, I’ll show you what we did to make sure our build was professional.

  • Lastly, we will talk about the best thing you can do to be successful in your build.

So if you want to have the confidence you need to start planning your dream tiny home build and actually get it done, then you’re in the right place.

Even if you’re worried about not having any experience, building your dream tiny home is definitely doable.  There are several things you need to consider to get it done though.  Some important questions to ask yourself are:

Do I want to do a full build on my own?

Or do I want to purchase a shell and finish the build myself?

Where will I build?

How much can I afford?

Where will I live?

These few questions are the most important ones to have answers to before getting started.

There are plenty of reputable builders that would be happy to do a custom shell build for you and that would cut your building time by almost half.

There’s still a lot to do to make your shell livable.

Once you know how much of the build you’re doing yourself, then you’re ready to find out where your construction site will be.

It’s hard to believe how difficult it really can be to find a place to build.  Even if you have family with a large backyard, you still have to think about what trees could be in the way. It would be terrible to be in the middle of your build only to realize your 13’ 6” home is too tall to get under a tree in the fenced in backyard!

Now everyone is curious about the cost of tiny home building. This could be another blogpost on its own, oh wait it is!

Check it out here…

What we will cover here is a rough estimate on a budget. You should know that the most expensive part of your build will be your trailer. It can cost upwards of $10,000! You will be spending a lot more on windows and doors than you would think. So make sure to budget enough for that. Especially since you want tempered glass. No one wants to be driving their brand new tiny home down the highway with cracked window panes!

Another high ticket item is and should be your insulation and weather barrier. We’re not using Tyvek here. If you want a dry and mold free tiny home, you want a weather barrier and insulation that will do the trick.

It would be beneficial to create a spreadsheet of what you think each item will cost for your build and filling it in as you get more exact numbers. Since you want a luxurious build that will stand the test of time, we’re going to show you how to make your build professional. Do you want to know how you can build your future tiny home for less than $100,000? It’s not a fairy tale. I recommend finding professionals to help you throughout the building process. Whether you have a friend that’s a Superintendent of a local builder (thanks Mike), or someone who is an experienced general contractor turned Master Inspector (@atsurfcon), talk to people you already trust that have experience building. The best thing we recommend is going through an inspection service.  If you have zero experience, building your future home can be very scary. Having an inspector provide you with suggestions and tips along the way can lift a huge weight off your shoulders.  We also recommend finding a consultant with experience not just in building safety, but in building science. Do your research to make sure your home is built better than if it was built by a professional builder.

The best thing you can do to be successful in your build is to plan and prepare. There are so many decisions to make before and throughout your build that having a plan can minimize the stress exponentially.  How much better to get your plan started, than to join the Tiny House University Community.
